i'm trying to find a substantial list of characters names from literature...but other than an impressive Shakespear list, i couldn't find anything so i'm making my own list.

Scarlett (Gone with the Wind)
Rhett (GWTW)
Holden (Catcher in the Rye)
Atticus (To Kill a Mocking Bird)
Medea (Euripides)
Eliza (Uncle Tom's Cabin)
Alice (Alice in Wonderland)
Lolita (Lolita) cute name, however is too perverse
Jay (The Great Gatsby)
Cyrus (East of Eden)
Milo (Catch 22)
(Mr)Darcy (Pride and Prejudice)
Estella (Great Expectations)
Nora (The Thin Man)
Shiloh (Shiloh)

Astrid (White Oleander). Definitely.
Also Ariel (Shakespeare again) and I came to secretly like the name Blue, due to my favourite book Special Topics in Calamity Physics =)
As for the rest...Holden (Catcher in the Rye) and Sadie & Tamsin, both from My Summer of Love =)

I know it's such a common name, but

Henry (the Time Traveler's Wife)

Love Atticus and Lolita (but for obvious reasons would never use that one) and I like Astrid as well.

It wasn't until I read this post that I realized... my daughter's nickname is the same as one of my favorite characters from a book. I'd never made the connection.

I'm a Nora Roberts fan, so it's far from "literature" and more "mindless escape" in most cases, including my favorite by her, Face the Fire, in which the main character's name is Mia. She's my favorite character of any of Nora's books, I like her strength and her passion and her fire.

My daughter is Miranda, nicknamed Mia.

On my list of literature names, I have Atticus, Scout, Maude, and Jeremy (Jem) from TKAM, Holden from Catcher in the Rye, Huck from the Mark Twain novels, and Phineas from A Separate Peace. I also love Juliet from the Shakespeare list (and more, but Juliet is my #1 name).

Hmmm. I'm thinking of more...

Adah, Leah, Ruth, and Rachel from The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver
Oskar from Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathon Safran Foer
... there are more, but I can't think of them.

Astrid can also be from A Saloonkeeper's Daughter by Drude Krog Janson.

Sula (Sula).

I connect Phineas with Harry Potter.

Gone with the Wind made me like Ashley for a boy, but Scarlett isn't too bad, although I think not so nice things when I hear it.

Lolita is sort of slutty. My name's rather similar.

I like Scarlett, Atticus, Alice and Jay off your list
From the Shakespeare list I like Edmund, Fabian, Imogen [which I already liked but not from Shakespeare!], Juliet, Lysander, Nathaniel, Rosalind and Rosaline among others!

The only names I have on my list from books are Caspian, from CS Lewis's Chronicles of Narnia, and I really want to use it! Sirius from Harry Potter, but I don't think I'd ever use it as much as I want to! And Lancelot from King Arthur legends, but I'd never use it!

I love literary names. I wouldn't necessarily use all of these, but I like them...most of them because of what the character means to me. :o)

Mercutio (Romeo & Juliet)
Viola (Twelfth Night)
Ophelia (Hamlet)
Beatrice (Much Ado About Nothing)
Desdemona (Othello)
Hermione (A Winter's Tale, Harry Potter, mythology)
Neville, Ginevra, Minerva (Harry Potter)
Rowena (Ivanhoe)
Guinevere, Arthur, and Morgan (The Once and Future King, etc.)
Elizabeth, Jane, and Charlotte (Pride & Prejudice)
Elinor, Brandon, and Edward (Sense & Sensibility)
Edmund (Mansfield Park)
Lucy, Caspian (Narnia books)
Eowyn (LOTR)
Oliver (Oliver Twist, A Well-Timed Enchantment)
Meliara and Braneric (Crown Duel)
Matthias and Mattimeo (Redwall, heheh)
Rhiannon, Olwynne, etc. (Kate Forsyth books)
Maerad and Cai (Pellinor books)
