It's pronounced Shuh-vahn. I like the way it looks, but it sounds like a trailer trash name, and I always want to pronounce it wrong when I'm reading it, even though I KNOW how to pronounce it.
Shee-von. Or at least I once met someone called Siobhan, who pronounced it that way. I personally don't like it. I know someone called Shivaughn too, and I like that better, but I'm still not a fan. And besides, people never know how to spell her name (and I think the same goes for Siobhan).
I used to work with a woman by that name that I never got along with so of course that doesn't help me like the name any. People used to call her Seabond, which is a denture adhesive.
I agree with that pronounciation. At least, I've never heard it pronounced any other way in the UK. All the Siobhans I've known have gone by the full name or Shiv. I hate Shiv.
shi-vaughn, but it's only because i frequent baby_names communities, haha. most people wouldn't know how, but it's hardly a trendy name. it's very traditional so i think the pronunciation issue should be overlooked :)

Date: 2007-09-07 02:05 pm (UTC)It's pretty common here because of the Irish population of the UK/proximity to Ireland; the ones I've known have generally abbreviated it to Shiv.
