I was at projekt revolution on the 24th, and because it was partially sponsored by verizon they had these text message screens up. Essentially people sent text messages and certain ones showed up on the screens. for the most part it was just "scream if you love *blank* stuff, and a lot of "red soxs rule" (yay. boston.)

one particular one really stuck out, i don't remember the gist of the message, but it was addressed to a girl named Viktoriya. I heard a girl behind us say something to the affect of "if that's how she really spells her name i'm going to kill myself."

Victoria is my favorite name and that spelling is just... atrocious! If they had just substituted the K for the C it wouldn't have been so bad. It wouldn't have been so bad if they'd picked between the I and the Y.

but no. What will people think of next?

I second the Russan/Eastern Europe way of spelling! That's what I was thinking too.

Seriously, this is a perfectly normal way of spelling it in Russia & in families that come from that general area. Removing the I or Y or using a C would actually make it less normal and more tryndee.

I have NEVER seen a name (even a Russian one) that uses both an I and a Y next to each other and thats why it shocked me so much. I'd have been less surprised if it was Wittoria (which i think is the hungarian or polish spelling) or simply Viktorya. To someone not entirely familiar with the spelling, what does it look like TRENDY EXCESS it doesn't even look like an alternate!

If you type Viktoriya into Wikipedia you'll get back a list of notable Russian women. I've seen it quite a lot.

It looks standardly Russian-Anglicized to me, too, NOT kre8tv.

The pronunciation is the teeniest bit different, and the spelling reflects this.

It's pretty common as и followed by й, я, ю, е or ё could create -iy-. Basically it is up to the prreference of the person transliterating the name, but if you stick to the official methods, Viktoriya or Viktoriia would be the most correct way of writing it.... :)
