i was on behindthename.com earlier and i looked at the names for most of the nationalities, and i noticed that i liked a lot of finnish and russian names. WDYT of these?

Finnish names, though neat, are mostly unusable in the US. Confusing, especially with double vowels. They remind me of hockey.

Russian names are slightly more usable, but I think they're best if you actually have at least a little Russian heritage. Otherwise they sound a bit silly.

I'm really not sure how to pronounce the Finnish names, so I don't know.

But I like Anya (I've seen is spelled Anja too?), Svetlana and Valentina. I like Dimitri, Luka, and Maxim.

and about the finnish names...i'm not sure exactly how to pronounce all of them either. but, i pronounce them how i assume they should be, based on how they look and by the few finnish people i know.

The thing I don't like about Finnish names, is that it has too often 2 vowels where I feel should just be one. I only like Kaija.
& Russian names I find too tacky. Although I met a Yelena once and she was very nice =)

i am from Russia and let me tell you a bit about these names:
Russian names:

Girls:
Anya - pet version of Anna, Ann, very popular
Dominika - never met or heard of anyone with Russian heritage named this name
Galina - pet version would be Galya, used to be popular years ago
Maryana - similar to Marina, Maria - basically an old-fashioned version of these two
Serafima -extremely old-fashioned, very few people like this name. Short version of this name is Fima
Svetlana - used to be more popular years ago than now, short version is Sveta, "Svet" in Russian means "Light"
Taisiya - short version would be something like Taia, sort of old-fashioned
Valentina - used to be a popular name in the 50s and 60s. Related to St. Valentine's
Veronika -this is a more modern name, which is made of two names combined. The first one is Vera, which means "believe" , the second one is "Nika" which means something like "Good Luck" or "Fortune" , so you get "believe in good fortune" or "believe in victory"
Yelena - same as Helen, short version would be "Lena", overused in Russia
Yevdokiya - this name was popular in my great great grandmother times :)

Boys:
Akim - very old fashioned
Aleksandr - obvious, same as Alexander, overused name in Russia
Dimitri - popular, short version would be "Dima"
Ilya - relatively popular and modern
Luka - used to be popular in my great grandmothers times, now this name is coming back
Makari- very old fashioned, another version of this name is "Makar"
Maxim - same as Max, very popular
Mikhail - same as Michael, very popular, short version would be "Misha"
Nikolai - same as Nicholas, used to be more popular before, short version would be "Kolya"
Nikon - my great grandfather's name (you don't want to name your son same as photocamera brand, do you?)
