What do you guys think about using gems as names? Ruby, Pearl, and Opal have been around for ages. Jade and Amber are newer ones. Recently I have seen several girls named Diamond and a sweet lady came in to the store last night with the name Beryl (another word for emerald.) I kind of like Garnet as a name. All the ones I can think of seem to work for girls only. Are there any gem inspired names that might sound good for a boy?

Birthstones in order: Garnet, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Diamond, Emerald, Pearl, Ruby, Peridot, Sapphire, Opal, Topaz, Zircon. Most peopleknow these. Some other gems/minerals: Onyx, Citrine, Cobalt, Galena, Lorimar, Schorl. Which are your favorites?

Sapphira is one of my favorite girl names. I also like Ruby. Not a fan of any of the others though.

Cobalt could probably work for a boy, too.

I also think Obsidian would be a lovely name.

I liked Pearl until my best friends introduced me to a character by the same name on Spongebob Squarepants. Kind of ruined it for me.

I also like Ruby a lot, but it seems unrealistic to me.

I think, unfortunately, a lot of the gem names sound trashy once they've become names. Like, Diamond and Sapphire; it's as if they're supposed to sound classy and regal, but they just come out gross.

i like a lot of jem names, but some sound trashy to me. i'm not sure why.
i like ruby, cobalt, onyx, garnet, jade, amber, pearl, and i'm warming up to amethyst. ruby and amber are probably the only ones that i would use.

I think that Cobalt could be a good name for a boy. It's probably the only one off of your list that I would ever consider for a name. I have never been a fan of flower/gem/spice names. Cobalt just doesn't have the same feeling as the others do, though. It's still not a big hit with me, but the best I've seen.

It sounds strong to me. I suppose it could go either way, but for some reason I envision a girl.

Guys tend to get named after rocks... Flint, Stone, Granite, etc.

My name is Amber.

I like Jade, Pearl, Obsidian, Garnet, Jasprer, Amethyst and Alexandrite. I think they're cute but I probably wouldn't use them. There are other names I love much more.

When I was, like, sixteen I had it in my head that I wanted to name a girl Sapphire, only I wanted to spell it Sapir. I saw it in a baby name book and for some reason loved it. I have better taste in baby names now.

I really don't care for Ruby. There's just something about it that I don't like as a name. I love the gemstone, but using it as a name bugs me.

I once found a gemstone named Iolite because I was looking for gem names for a character for an RP once and I really, really liked it. There's also Briolette, which is a way of cutting gems.

Beryl makes me think of Queen Beryl in Sailor Moon and I'd never. I'd laugh way too much. Same with Kunzite, Jadeite, Zoisite, Nephrite, Diamond, Sapphire, Emerald, and Zircon.

a girl i worked with had a daughter Madison Ruby... she wanted to name her Ruby Madison, but her mother had a fit. she was very young when she had the baby, so she just listened to her mom.

My grandmother's first name is Coral, which is sort of a gem name. Kind of... I hope to use it for a middle name someday.

I like Jasper and Jett for boy gem/stone names. Cobalt sounds neat too. I had aunts named Garnet and Pearl - I love these names!

Most of them I don't hate, but I could never use them.
I'd think too much of my AS geology classes.

I actually knew a woman named Emerald.
I was briefly under the mistaken impression that her full name was Emerald Stone, which would be horrible. It turned out that she, Emerald, had the same position at the company as a woman named Mrs. Stone, so that I assumed they were the same person.

I kind of like it, but wouldn't name a kid that. Nicknames options aren't bad, though; Emmie or Emme would be cute.

I like Jade a lot, but I'd hesitate to use it as a first name. Most gem names seem a little character-y to me. Too staged or something.

My great uncles name was Pearl, ha, even though that's very odd!

I like Zircon (sounds like Xerxes, although not spelled like it). I also like Onyx, and Schorl for a boy.

I always thought Drusie would be such a cool name.. maybe not for a human, though.

I like Ruby and Pearl. Not sure about Opal. Opal's my birthstone and I love it but I'm not sure about actually naming anyone that. Diamond sounds trashy but I like Garnet and Beryl. I knew a girl named Amethyst. If I ever get a black cat, I am naming it Onyx.

Oh, and I forgot Jade. It's my cousin's middle name. I like it, but after all this Jayden crap going around, I don't like it as much anymore.

I also forgot that I may name a daughter Gemma one day because I love it.
