Jul. 27th, 2007 12:17 amI was looking through an Irish baby names website and came across the names Niamh (I prefer it pronounced "nee-iv" instead of "neve" and Nuala "noo-la" or Finnoula "fi-noo-la". What do you like? The hubby prefers more traditionally spelled names, but I really like the look of these, especially Niamh, even though I'm sure she will be called "nee-um" or some other version like that. Help! :)

Date: 2007-07-27 04:52 am (UTC)You could always use Nieve instead of Niamh. I also love the name Nieva which is very similar.
I am also a lover of traditional spellings...but i have come to the conclusion that personally...I would rather spell it in a more pronounceable way then having to explain my kids name or have them explain it to everyone.

Date: 2007-07-27 07:55 am (UTC)My ex-boyfriend's ex-girlfriend (hehe) is called Nuala and her nickname is "Nu" I really like the name but I don't think I'd be able to use it - we are still friends and I think he'd think it would be very wierd. haha

Date: 2007-07-27 12:26 pm (UTC)If I was, say a first grade teacher, I would say Ny-E-Mah (Niamh) when taking roll call.
It could end up being frustrating and/or embarrassing.
I went to school with a girl named Anna (pronounced ah-na) and she would always get mad when people called her Ann-Ah.

Date: 2007-07-28 02:52 am (UTC)What I hate is when people call their children Irish names but spell them like they sound (I know a Shivorn, ew). If you are going to give your child an irish name it should be spelled correctly.
Sorry for the rant but it drives me crazy!
