Date: 2007-07-23 06:11 pm (UTC)In italian it's the name which Adriana/Adriano come from, and which also gives name to Mar Adriatico, a sea on the west coast of Italy.
Adri is what we call Adriano or Adriana for short in Italy :)

Date: 2007-07-23 06:15 pm (UTC)And your explanation covers why my niece's grandmother calls her Adri, as the family is Italian. I still hate it. And so does my sister, but she won't correct her MIL, which I can respect. On the other hand when my fiance's aunt started calling my daughter Mimi, Paige and Paigey, I asked her (nicely) to please not ever call my daughter by those names. Her name is Miranda Paige. I didn't name her that to have her called by her middle name, and I just hate the nickname Mimi.

Date: 2007-07-23 11:33 pm (UTC)Walkress sounds like Walrus.
Sonaly= if you need to include a pronunciation guide, it's almost always a bad idea.
Tolde= ditto.

Date: 2007-07-24 01:01 am (UTC)I don't really like Walkress at all, but I like True as a middle name.
Sonaly is SO PRETTY, but I think Arabella doesn't suit it well as a middle name.
I don't like Tolde much either, but I like Kaligan.

Date: 2007-07-24 05:00 am (UTC)It's funny how Adria sounds weird to so many people, I thought it was a known name :) I guess I'm biased because it's one of my cousins' name in the US.

Date: 2007-07-24 05:03 am (UTC)I thought it might derive from the name Gertrude somehow
I also like the sound of Sonaly, but unfortunately to me it's too close to the italian word 'sonagli', which means 'rattle(s)'

Date: 2007-07-24 10:38 am (UTC)Adria's the name of the Orici (invincible leader of a race of wierd white-skinned old guys who brainwash) on Stargate SG-1. That's my only association with the name.

Date: 2007-07-26 08:59 pm (UTC)Oh, and by the way, there are people who speak English who live all over the world -- including in Italy, as the OP states he or she is.
