Ok..so I know ppl here have said Amelia is the name of a birth defect. Now, I LOVE the name but obviously not that relation.

My question is...would you pronunce Amelia and Emilia the name way
Which do you like better.

I pronounce them the same way, but I prefer Amelia. I have never even heard of a birth defect called "Amelia" and I think the name is common enough that it's not what people think of when they hear it. Really, unless your child HAS it, I think the name is fine.

I pronounce them pretty much the same way. My Ah and Eh sound kinda sound the same when I say them. I really like the spelling Emilia though

I'd say Emilia with more of an "Eh" sound then an "Ah" sound. I love Amelia though.

I think "Amelia" is the prettier name. I grew up with an Amelia, who went by Amie.

Since amelia is the condition of being born without a limb, or with a defective limb (missing fingers, for instance), I would wait until the child was actually born and confirmed whole before telling the nurse that's the name to put on the paperwork. I'm just superstitious enough to worry about things like that. Although I guess that's the kind of thing they can tell in advance with ultrasound, huh?

And, "Addison" is the name of a disease, and clearly that has not stopped thousands of people from naming their babies Addison/Adyson/all the variants.

I like Amelia, but for someone else's kid. I can't get past the "MEALY" sound in the middle, and there's Amelia Bedelia to boot. MEALY. Ugh.

Nevertheless, I do pronounce Amelia and Emilia differently. To me, Amelia is UH-meel-ee-uh, while Emilia is EH-meel-ee-uh or AY-(the long "a" sound)-meel-ee-uh.

I had the same question about Amelie vs. Emily.
Those two, I'm sure they're not pronounced the same, but it is indeed hard to tell them apart, except for the stressed syllable.

Amelia and Emilia, instead, are pretty different
Amelia = Ah-MEH-lee-ah
Emilia = Em-EE-lee-ah
that's how they're pronounced in italian, here they're normal, used names, but I like Emilia better as Amelia is considered a witch's name, after a famous character in a comic book from the 60's.

My friend has a beautiful little girl called Amelia. I'd pronounce both spellings the same way. I like Amelia better.
