[identity profile] missbailey.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
So I know I'm having a baby. I'm not going to name it until I see it. But i would like some ideas first. I like natural names like Rain, Fox, Lily. Names with meaning behind them too.
My boyfriend is Native Candian-Mi'kmaq and I'm of Spanish/French Decent. I really like Mi'kmaq names. Such as Wowkwis(Fox)pron. Wow-Gwis, Muin(bear)pron Moo-in, Pasmay(Peter) pron. Pas-a-meye.
His last name is Knockwood so keep that in mind. I really like the suggestion of tree names but Cedar Knockwood would sound like a cruel joke.
Also, Tradition is not too stong in the Mi'Kmaq culture for naming. Most Mi'Kmaq people nowadays have English names.
So help me get some ideas with meaning behind them!
Thank you in advance.
^.^

PS no B names we are both Bs and his son is a B. I really hate when familys do that.

I think Muin is a nice name, and not too unusual, although Wowkwis might be my favorite listed.

This might be more work than is necessary, but you could see if there are names that are pronounced the same/look the same in both languages.

You could also use a Mi'kmaq name, give the child a middle name (of whatever language) and introduce the child to your family either as the child's middle name and/or the initials (i.e. "This is Pasmay Jack, call him Jack or PJ")

I suggest not using native names if you're not cool with the ones from your husbands culture, using names from a different native language or culture just isn't right, I'd also get him to look more into how naming is done in his culture because it might not be okay to just grab any word and turn it into a name.

I agree with xnaivetex about doing a little research on traditional Mi'kmaq naming. Thankfully you have nine months to do it! I also really like natural names, if you are an outdoors-y type, it would be neat to name your baby after some place or plant that you really identify with - an obvious one would be River if you like to kayak and so on...

Natural names I like -
Aspen
Alder
Ash
Fern
Brook
Lavender
Meadow
Moss

I wouldn't use all of these, but for the right person, I think they could all work.

I also like Fox, because of the X-files - hehe.
