[identity profile] girlsteve.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
There’s an ‘interesting names’ section in one of my Nan’s woman’s interest magazines that I like to read. It’s generally people writing in to say what strange names their grandchildren have, although they’re rarely room stopping. Then I came across this little gem:

we were leafing through the dictionary looking for an unusal name for our little girl, when we came across an entry that read ‘out of this world’. That’s what she is, and that’s what we called her

Yeah… they named their kid Alien.

Alien?

Oh dear. Perhaps they pronounce it Aah-leean?

Wow that's just ... just no.
OK it's sort of cute in the abstract, but come on, do they not know what an alien literally is? In terms of people or scifi.

The teasing potential is just too painfully obvious, poor kid. Still I guess she could go by Allie.

Ooh, futuristic. Not. At least she'll be considered cool among the 1st grade boys.

Most teaseworthy names are at least only teaseworthy to a particular age. Certain names are only likely to be teased in preschool or in highschool. But this name will be teased at all ages.

think that's bad? My DH has a cousin who named their son Spider... yes Spider. How many people associate good things with spiders? Really? From what I understand it had something to do with a singer in a band? I dunno, but I feel for the kid!

Oh man...poor kid.
It's actually a Dutch name, too. Only here it's pronounced 'Ah-leen'.
But still. The UFO connection will always be made, I'm afraid.

A little off topic...but I knew someone named Aileen, who was called "Alien" by "creative" little kids, haha.

O_____O

I´m speechless..really....

OMFG !!!

do they hate her ?

what reason do parents have to name their kids like that...

in such cases I´m glad that something like that is not allowed here !

Wouldn't that make it worse? At least they're honest about their intentions! Respect to them. Hee.
