If you name him Jonathan, he WILL be called Jon, in school and later on through his life, whether you like it or not.

i agree... but, my name is Jennifer. we had about three Jennifers in our class, i was the ONLY one called Jenn, the other two went by Jennifer.

my friend in school, his name was Henry Richard, he went by Rick.

so long as you start calling him by the nickname that you like, then make it clear as he enters school, he will most likely be called it. not by EVERYONE, but atleast in school situations, etc.
