[identity profile] grissomsgirl.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi! I have always loved names like Amber and Sapphire so I have been looking through books about crystals and noting ones I thought would make pretty names. It's way easier to find ones for girls than ones that suit boys though! If anyone has any suggestions for minerals or crystals that make good boys names please comment. :)

Girl's Names:

Amber
Jade
Emerald
Amethyst
Sapphire
Ruby
Opal
Chrysocolla
Chrysoprase
Serpentine
Turquoise
Garnet
Abalone
Chalcedoney
Tourmaline

Boy's Names:

Jasper
Carnelian
Jet
Obsidian
Larimar
Flint

What do you think?

I like Ruby and Amber. I've actually known two people with daughters named Amethyst. It's pretty. Most of them I just associate too closely with rocks, but they are nice-sounding words.

Also, the name of the kid who did Setsuko's English voiceover in Grave of the Fireflies was named Rhoda Chrosite. I doubt it's a coincidence, but I wonder if it's a stage name or her real name.

Also, I saw someone on either Maury or Jerry whose name was Turquoisa O.o

Also, "Abalone" will probably be called "Baloney" her whole life ;) Plus it's a mollusk, so...not a great name, IMO.

At least one of my baby names books lists "Anemone" as a name. I hope to god no one's ever used it!

I found Iolite once when looking up gem stone names for an rp I was in.

Another name I found. Briolette: a way of cutting stones for jewelry.

I had two great aunts named Garnet (def. a girls name) and Pearl. I always thought that was so lovely...

Opal, Ruby, Jasper, Jet and Flint are great and not too common, but Sapphire and Emerald might be a bit much. I knew a little girl named Sapphire, and everyone in her kindergarden class called her "Sand-fire" because they couldn't pronounce it.

I like your list, generally. I don't know that I like
Chrysocolla
Chrysoprase
Chalcedoney

but the rest are really pretty. I like the boy's names too. I've always liked Jetty, as in black or dark, but now that I've seen Jett, I think it's nicer.

I knew a family who used to take care of foster children, and once they got two little girls, sisters I think, one named Sapphire Star ((first name)). Her sister's name was Jade, I think. I thought Sapphire Star was a beautiful name, once I got used to it. We usually called her Star.

I think that the short crystal names like Ruby and Jade work, but the three syllable ones and dull coloured rocks don't. I'd be saying to my mother, "Why did I have to be arsenopyrite? why couldn't I have been called Amber?

I used to really like mineral and such names,

But then I took geology, and I HATE it, so all of these names have got bad associations for me!
*shudders*

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves rock names!

Tourmaline is my favorite. I also like Garnet and Amethyst. Not a huge fan of the common ones like Jade, Amber, Ruby, etc.

I like Carnelian and Jet, too.

I've also considered Olivine and Peridot.

When I was little, my mum made me a mermaid ragdoll and I named her Anemone. Not good on an actual person, though!

Yeah, it's a good name for a mermaid, though!

Obsidian? Who are you to post my secret favorite boy's name on the internet! -GASP-

I jest. Sort of. But yes. It really is my favorite male name, by far.

Obsidian's great because it shortens to something "normal" (Sid) if he decides he's sick of the uniqueness his momma imposed upon him, and it's something phonetic, as well.

And then there's my weakness for names that mean something concrete. I like a LOT of gemstone names for that reason, to be honest. And food names, but we won't go there right now.

As far as more boy-appropriate stone names... hrm. Onyx? Is that too harsh?

Then, of course, there's Mica... The only problem with Mica might be that "Micah" (pronounced the same) is a Biblical male name, so people would constantly ask why the H was dropped as you introduce hypothetical Mica to their hypothetical flock of Biblically named children.
