The Brazilian statistics agency IBGE recently released a new interesting tool which allows users to find out the popularity of names in different states and decades, based on data from the 2010 Census.

http://censo2010.ibge.gov.br/nomes/#/search

The page is in Portuguese, of course, but the search is pretty easy to use. You type a name, then choose 'masculino' for male,  'feminino' for female or 'ambos os sexos' for both genders, and choose the Brazilian state and town - or just leave 'Brazil' in the third field to see the nationwide popularity of a name.

In the top menu, there is a link named "Nomes mais populares" (most popular names), which will lead you to a list of the most popular names in the country. Or you can just click on the follwing link: http://censo2010.ibge.gov.br/nomes/#/ranking

Maria and Ana are the most popular for girls, but it is important to add that many women in Brazil have double names, like Maria Cristina or Ana Paula. If you choose a name from that list, a link opens in the bottom of the page. By clicking on it, you can see the name's popularity by decade. It's pretty interesting.
